Rats on the rise as trash goes uncollected in Trelawny
Residents in several Trelawny districts are expressing concern over the non-collection of garbage since the passage of Hurricane Melissa. Affected areas include Hague, Daniel Town, and Zion.
George Sylvester of Zion said he is particularly worried.
"I have noticed an increase in rats running in and out of domestic garbage placed on the roadside. I want to know if Solid Waste is going to wait until there is a break out of diseases before they collect the garbage," Sylvester said.
Councilor Roydell Williams of the Martha Brae Division has also voiced concern and said he has reached out to Solid Waste officials about the matter.
"All I get are promises but no action," Williams said.
Louis Porter, Senior Public Cleaning Officer at the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), acknowledged the problem.
"We are aware of the situation. However, we are faced with some difficulties which are being sorted out, and the collection of garbage will resume," Porter told The Star.
