Spanish Town spring surprise JPL win over Arnett
Promoted side Spanish Town Police recorded a surprise 2-1 victory over host Arnett Gardens in their Jamaica Premier League football encounter at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex last evening.
Carlington Blackwood and Junior McGregor were the goalscorers for Spanish Town Police, netting in the 28th minute and 89th minutes, respectively.
Fabian Reid scored for Arnett in the 77th minute.
The victory was Spanish Town's fifth of the season from 24 matches.
Despite the win, Spanish Town Police remain at the bottom of the standings on 18 points. On the other hand, Arnett remain seventh on 30 points.
OPENING MATCH
In the opening match of the doubleheader, Racing United defeated Chapelton Maroons 2-0.
Jakob Cole in the 29th minute and Kadean Young in the 70th minute were the goalscorers for the Anthony Patrick-coached Racing United.
Second-place Racing United, who are now on 45 points, have reduced league leaders Montego Bay United's advantage to five points atop the standings.
Victory was the Gregory Park-based team's 11th of the season. Meanwhile, Chapelton Maroons remain fifth in the standings on 32.
Racing United dominated the early proceedings and they pushed their opponents back deep into their own half with a number of attacking plays on both sides of the field.
They were finally rewarded when Cole, a livewire down the right flank, arrived at the near post to fire home from close range and give his team the lead.
Racing United, who played with a lot confidence and flair, wrapped up the victory midway the second stanza as Young ran by two Chapelton defenders to volley home from point-blank range.
